From the 13th century it was a hospice for the sick and poor, administered by the Humiliated Brotherhood. In 1477 the Serviti Brotherhood took over the monastery, abandoning the hospital activities in order to open schools; a primary one from 1644 to 1788, then a secondary on (from 1786). In 1852 the Canton set it aside as a senior secondary school. Since 1982 the building has been the seat of the Mendrisio Art Museum.
