If visitors wish to fully enjoy the beauty which characterises the Mendrisiotto and Lower Ceresio Region, to understand its most important naturalistic secrets and to discover its wealth of artistic and cultural treasures, they must consider exploring the area on foot.
The observer who pays little attention and who passes through this area quickly will hardly be able to realise how many special features there are and what these are; the unique parts which deserve to be visited. But there are many surprises waiting for the day-tripper who decides to set out on the 300 km of marked paths in the Region. Naturalistic treasures are present on the two splendid mountains which surround and limit the territory towards north. Monte Generoso (1704 m above sea-level), whose peak is easy to reach by rack rail, and Monte San Giorgio (1094 m above sea-level), on the UNESCO World Heritage List for the quality and specific nature of its palaeontological treasures, will not disappoint the tourist who is in search of emotions. Many hikes lead along and within the two splendid valleys closed in by the slopes of Monte Generoso; Val Mara and the Muggio Valley, with the Park of the Breggia Gorge and the ethnographic museum (a true museum of and in the area). Everywhere the panorama is magnificent and the visitor can gaze over the Alps and the Padana Plain. There are many places to rest along the paths, which offer pleasant moments of relaxation with wine, food and culture (very old grottoes, cellars for wine-tasting, monuments and museums).
In short, walking in the area is certainly one of the best ways to discover the wealth and variety to be seen in this Region, which is waiting to surprise the visitor and can do so.
