The main centre of the village is in an open, sunny position, overlooking wide spaces which still admit substantial agricultural activity, which was once the population’s only important source of income.
The village takes its name from the old castle whose foundations can still be seen and from the Church of St. Peter, which on Christmas Eve in 1390 was the scene of a bloody massacre between the Guelfi and Ghibellini families.
The territory is wide, extending to the pastures of Monte Generoso.
Castel San Pietro is the birthplace of numerous artists, painters and stucco workers, such as the Carabelli, Pozzi, Maggi and others, as well as of politicians of the past, notably the landamman (highest official in a Swiss canton), G.B. Maggi.

Interesting buildings:
Parish Church St. Eusebio (17th c., architect Agostino Silva).
Church of St. Peter, or the Red Church (1343 on foundations from the 12th or 13th c.).
Church of St. Antonino in Obino (15th c.).
Chapel of St. Rocco (16th c.).
The Turconi Family Mansion in Loverciano, now the College of St. Angelo (early 18th c.); many very famous people were guests here, such as Giuseppe Garibaldi, Giuseppe Mazzini, Giuseppe Verdi, Alessandro Manzoni and King Umberto I.
Several houses of various styles and periods are also worthy of attention.
Chapel of St. Fermo in Campora (1830).

Points of special interest:
The Gorge of the River Breggia and bridge across the valley.
The still visible foundations of the old castle.
Major wine-growing commune in Ticino.
In the area of Valsago (Campora) were discovered Roman tombs.
