The village is at the crossing of the roads from Stabio and Genestrerio, the former heading to Clivio (I), the latter to Rancate, and Besazio.
The area seems to have been inhabited since ancient times; mortuary vases and Roman coins have been found near the Church of St. Joseph, probably due to the proximity of Stabio, a Roman regional capital.
Ligornetto can boast to being the birthplace of the Velas, including the great sculptor, Vincenzo, as well as the sculptor, Apollonio Pessina.
Interesting buildings:
Parish Church of St. Laurence the Martyr (13th c., completely modified in the 18th c.).
Church of St. Joseph (probably 16th c.).
Museums:
Vela Museum
Pessina Museum
