The area seems to have been inhabited since ancient times; mortuary vases and Roman coins have been found near the Church of St. Joseph, probably due to the proximity of Stabio, a Roman regional capital. Ligornetto can boast to being the birthplace of the Velas, including the great sculptor, Vincenzo, as well as the sculptor, Apollonio Pessina. Interesting buildings: Parish Church of St. Laurence the Martyr (13th c., completely modified in the 18th c.). Church of St. Joseph (probably 16th c.).
