A village composed of several patrician houses and first mentioned in 799, Melano was an important lake port during the Middle Ages. In the early 12th century it was occupied by Como during its wars against Milan.
Today the motorway, the canton road, and the railway have separated the centre from the lake.
After abandoning the traditional fishing and forestry activities, which were once the primary sources of revenue, the population now works in various sectors of the economy.
