The village, on the road leading up Monte Generoso, is located above Mendrisio with a panoramic view.
The first settlements probably date to the 11th or 12th centuries, but the earliest Church documents date from the 14th century only.
Salorino is the birthplace of a number of stucco workers, including Moreschi di Somazzo, who worked in Würzburg in the early 18th century, and different members of the Brenni family, who worked in Tortona.
From 01.04. 2004 Salorino has become a hamlet of Mendrisio.
Interesting buildings:
Parish Church of St. Zenone (17th c., on older foundations).
Chapel of St. Rocco (17th c.).
Chapel of St. John in Somazzo (17th-18th c.).
Chapel of St. Mark, or of Our Lady of Good Advice in Cragno (19th c.).
Ancient houses have retained the stuccoes and frescoes of various periods; the group of caves on three levels is typical.
